IDC: May slowdown in PC shipments could derail Q2 growth forecast

Market watcher pours more cold water on PC market recovery.

Market watcher IDC admits its second quarter growth projections for the worldwide PC market could be missed because of a marked downturn in shipments during May.

The analyst had expected second quarter shipments to be up on Q1, when a 13.3 per cent fall in units was recorded, with a Q2 11.7 per cent year-on-year decline forecast.

However, a slower than expected May means this projection could be missed unless enough devices were shipped in June to make up the shortfall, IDC has warned.

According to IDC's figures, PC shipments were down by 18 per cent in the UK, Germany, France and Turkey, which is two percentage points lower than in April.

"The results for May are behind pace for achieving the projected 2Q13 growth rates, although stronger June results could still make up most, if not all, of the difference," the company said in a statement.

Loren Loverde, programme vice president of worldwide PC trackers at IDC, said it's likely the Q2 forecast will be missed.

"The expectation for the second quarter was not all that high, showing only minor improvement from the first quarter. But the May results reflect deteriorating conditions, rather than an improvement and the market will probably fall short of expectations," warned Loverde.

"We still expect an improvement in the second half of the year as more new products are launched and we get into the back-to-school and holiday seasons. But the market will likely remain cautious about the second half of 2013."
