HP ProLiant DL80 Gen9 review

HP’s new DL80 Gen9 brings E5-2600 v3 server power within the reach of SMBs

iLO4 included

Server management doesn't get any better as the server is blessed with HP's iLO4 controller which provides a wealth of information about server operations plus access to remote support. HP's larger servers provide a dedicated port for network access but on the DL80 Gen9, the iLO4 controller shares access with the first Gigabit port.

From the iLO4 web interface, we could monitor all critical components and remotely control the server's power. However, you'll need an Advanced license to get features such as OS remote control, virtual media, remote console record and playback plus advanced power monitoring and dynamic power capping.

OS installation took us less than an hour using the embedded Active Intelligent Provisioning tool which does away with the need to boot the server with a deployment disk. We also loaded the free System Management HomePage utility which provides a browser interface offering basic local monitoring of critical components.

HP's Insight Control handles general network systems management. We also used HP's iOS Insight Online app with our Passport account to view registered systems, monitor support cases and check support contracts.

HP has tightened up its server support as you only get access to regular ROM BIOS firmware updates with a valid warranty or support contract. However, it will provide open access to critical firmware updates regardless of support agreements.

HP's iOS Insight Online app allowed us to access our Passport account, view support contracts and download documentation

Conclusion

HP's ProLiant DL80 Gen9 is a fine choice for storage-focused SMBs that want a rack server that can grow with them at a price they can afford. There are a lot of storage options so choose carefully when ordering but its scalable design makes it a good long-term investment and its E5-2600 v3 Xeon power and low price earns it a well-deserved Recommended award.

Verdict

SMBs that want the latest E5-2600 v3 Xeons in their server will like the budget-friendly ProLiant DL80 Gen9. It may have a low starting price but features aren’t compromised and its high capacity makes it a fine choice for storage-centric apps
