Security remains a vital concern for businesses of all types, and customers across a range of industries are increasingly relying on managed service providers to be their main defence against a variety of threats.

Keeping up with the ever-changing world of security can sometimes be a challenging prospect for MSPs, however, and it’s important to ensure that they’re equipped with the best possible tools.

MSPs are often expected to act as the security heartbeat of the businesses they serve, and are hit with the dual pressures of operating their own companies and supporting their partners, while also having to keep up with the evolving threat landscape and the challenges that are placed at their doors on a daily basis.

Sophos has a rich history of securing business assets both physical and digital. Datto has a well-established reputation for the security and other services it offers to its partners. Together, they are developing solutions to make security easier, faster and safer for channel companies and their customers.

“From our side, we’ve seen the majority of the endpoints are now really mobile,” says Matt Smith, senior solutions engineer for Datto. “And with a mobile workforce, you’ve no idea what networks they’re joining. Now MSPs are looking at the stack rather than single products. It’s becoming harder for an MSP to manage, and that’s really where an RMM [remote monitoring and management] comes into the game.”

“The perfect opportunity for having this combination of Datto and Sophos is protecting ourselves – protecting the MSP,” says Kyle Torres, security channel account executive for Sophos. “Supply chain attacks were the [most prominent] of the security attacks last year. But one thing’s for certain, that once it’s implemented, you need to run with it, as Gartner predicts that by 2024, 75% of organisations will initiate some form of machine learning (ML).

However, data scientists shouldn’t be extracting deep insights from company data unless they’re aligned to a business goal or solving a business problem. This can then indicate how AI and machine learning can be attributed to success.

Sivan Metzger, managing director, MLOps & Governance at DataRobot, has said that we’re now at a point where businesses will finally start to see the benefit of their AI investments, as pressure from CFOs continues to mount.

He goes on to say that data scientists should also begin to see results that can help them to adapt their work to give their company a better advantage.

Previously, this had been an issue, and Metzger credits these issues to a disconnect between the data team, IT operations and stakeholders on the business side (i.e. the potential consumers of data science insights). Data science and IT operations teams have very different considerations and goals – and machine learning is very different from running software. This disconnect is known as the ‘production gap’, and can prevent AI solutions from being properly executed.

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) is a combination of processes, best practices and underpinning technologies which seeks to bridge this gap by increasing collaboration and communication between data scientists and operations staff – and ultimately ensuring that AI is properly deployed and can begin to deliver the ROI promised.

To learn more about how MLOps can improve your returns on AI, watch IT Pro and DataRobot’s webinar ‘The Last Mile to AI ROI’, in which Metzger and data scientist Rajiv Shah discuss topics including:

How to eliminate AI-related risks by adopting MLOps best practices

The inherent challenges of production model deployment and how to overcome them

Model-monitoring best practices

Production lifecycle management and why it matters

Artificial intelligence has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. From the early Church-Turing thesis on computable functions to John McCarthy coining the term and establishing the first AI research workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956, the technology has made huge strides. No longer the realm of Hollywood blockbusters, AI is now something we all carry around in our pockets and cross paths with in everyday life.

AI is also filtering into the business world, thanks to big data, advanced analytics and machine learning promising new, efficient ways of working and competitive gains to enable growth. You might view AI as the sole pursuit of big tech companies, or something to tackle tomorrow, but dismissing it outright is akin to shrugging off business basics like the internet or email as a valued resource.

But what can AI actually do for your business? Dr Michael Wu, chief AI strategist at PROS, believes this is “the wrong question to ask”. Instead, he believes that question needs to be reframed to consider bringing AI into a larger digital strategy.

“AI can pretty much do anything a human can do providing that you can fully digitise the process. If you can fully digitise the process you will have the data to train the AI to mimic what we do,” said Wu. “The real question that a company should ask is ‘what can you digitise’? This is another argument why you should digitally transform your business, because then you will have the digital data to train your artificial intelligence.”

With the right data in place, AI has the ability to integrate into everything from your cybersecurity setup to ecommerce platforms. Think detecting behavioral anomalies and responding rapidly to threats, or personalising content to increase an online store’s conversion rate.

Businesses have been harnessing the power of technology for decades, and AI represents the next evolutionary step. Implement it correctly and it can interpret data and draw out valuable insight. Even if you are new to AI, it’s worth researching and considering the possible impact it could have in unlocking your organisation’s potential.

To learn more about how AI research is changing the game for businesses, register now for the IT Pro Live webinar taking place on Thursday 25 June.
In the past few weeks, the coronavirus crisis has driven a huge surge in remote working, creating a massive spike in the volume of unstructured data that businesses have to process, including phone calls, emails, instant messages and collaborative files – not to mention the sundry other files and databases that are generated as part of everyday business operations.

The reality of the situation is that nobody knows how long the current global lockdowns are going to continue for. Businesses may well be stuck in this mode of operations for months, and even when the quarantines do eventually lift, now that remote working has been proven as a viable option, many employees will no longer want to go back to their offices. What that means is that this data surge isn’t going to entirely subside when and if things go back to normal - businesses will have to adapt to a new and higher baseline level of data generation.

All of this data needs to be stored somewhere, but manually auditing and transferring it to the relevant storage location is an inefficient and time-consuming process for storage managers. The increased demands from remote workers and higher data volumes are also putting new stresses on infrastructure, which drives up maintenance costs and creates greater possibilities of outages or failures.

Instead, businesses can use modern data management tools to automatically transfer data to a highly scalable and easy-to-manage object storage platform with rules-based policies. This allows storage admins to take advantage of more cost-effective models, using smart algorithms to intelligently move infrequently-accessed data to low-cost archive storage, saving them money and allowing them to focus on mission-critical data instead.

Object storage is also particularly useful for accessing large volumes of unstructured data, which make up the core of big data projects, as it easily scales to support large datasets without requiring complex database schema or tiered folder architecture. Instead, the flat pool created by object storage allows for the sort of deep analysis that’s otherwise impossible with traditional file storage.

Register now to watch this on-demand webinar, brought to you in association with IBM, where you’ll hear from Gajun Ganendran, Asia Pacific CTO for IBM Cloud Platform and Moonwalk founder Michael Harvey, on topics including:

How object storage can reduce time and cost spent on data backup operations

Why object storage is best-suited to cloud-native applications

The security benefits of object storage versus file-based cloud storage platforms

There's a looming problem on the horizon, which is going to cause a lot of headaches for businesses if they're not prepared. The issue in question? Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 7 in January 2020, meaning that businesses have less than a year to prepare their migration strategies for upgrading their business devices to a newer, supported version of Microsoft's OS.

What to do if you're still running Windows 7 Two thirds of businesses not prepped for death of Windows 7 Is Microsoft killing off Windows 7 early?

When Windows 7 reaches End-Of-Life, it'll likely affect a lot of businesses. Windows 7 still runs on around a quarter of UK desktop PCs, according to StatCounter. It's unknown how many of those are business machines as opposed to personal devices, but it's likely to be a significant number.

If businesses haven't upgraded to a more recent OS by the time support is withdrawn, they face the prospect of having to pay Microsoft for extended support, which will get more expensive over time. A much more cost-effective solution is to ensure that you've got a strategy in place to migrate your Windows 7 desktops to Windows 10, ensuring that you're future-proofed for as long as possible.

If you want to know more about the best way to ensure a smooth and painless Windows 7 migration, you can catch up with our on-demand webinar on 'The Windows 7 clock is ticking: what should you do next?'

What can you expect?

The webinar explores the practical options available: do you upgrade, replace or virtualise?
As your employees are out and about accessing your network form a range of devices - some of which might not even be owned or controlled by your company, you need to be vigilant. But how can you watch over something you can't see?

That's where endpoint security comes in. Endpoints take many forms - from mobile devices and laptops to PCs, printers and everything in between. So the first step towards ensuring endpoint security has to be ensuring you know what endpoints you're dealing with.

Once you understand the landscape, you must then secure it. But that is often easier said than done.

Organisations have long invested in software-based security measures and these have staved off most attacks, leaving firms focused on prevention rather than cure. However, those with malintent are becoming even smarter and using more sophisticated techniques, so organisations must be prepared to up their security game.

The recent LoJax attack, which was perpetrated by Fancy Bear in the real world, shocked many. Mainly because they weren't prepared for something like that to happen. Up until that point, BIOS/UEFI rootkit attacks had been the work of fiction rather than fact.

In another recent example, supporters of PewDiePie put the fear into many suggesting they would hack' their printers if they didn't voice their support for the vlogger too. But was this really a case of the baddies finding a security loophole or just lazy/sloppy admin?

Dealing with such new, emerging and evermore sophisticated threats requires security at the hardware as well as the software level. Organisations must be prepared to secure from the top down and the inside out.

The threat of being hacked or breached in some way is a reality of modern business life. The average financial cost of a cyber security breach for UK organisations is suggested to be anywhere from as little as 1,000 to just shy of 10,000. However, we know such attacks can cost organisations dearly elsewhere, too.

Compounding the scary stats around security generally is the fact the way we work (and live) is changing almost beyond recognition. Experts predict that, by 2020, flexible working will be the norm among businesses. With all the benefits this increased agility and ability to work anywhere and at any time, there are also increased risks.

There's a very fine line between where general best practice/common sense ends and advanced levels of security starts. But whose responsibility is it to ensure both are considered and carried out? The simple answer is everyone. However, IT must lead the charge and bring users along on the journey, ensuring they understand the potential consequences of their actions.

But it's not just about technology in isolation. It's about ensuring people have the right tools to keep the information your organisation holds dear safe without even having to think about it.

Catch up on our webinar, brought to you by HP and Intel in association with IT Pro, which brings together experts in this field to discuss and debate the challenges, debunk myths and help your business make clued-up decisions about how to move forward and be more efficient, effective, productive and, ultimately, successful in a safe and secure manner.

Moderated by B2B editorial director Maggie Holland, the webinar also features the expertise and opinion of Howard Roberts, an HP distinguished technologist, Jeff Kilford, UK Client Compute Group Lead for Intel, and former analyst and current freelance journalist and broadcaster, Rene Millman. That much is a fact. But how to move from theory to reality still poses a massive headache for many organisations, large and small.

But, with disruption happening across all organisations in all sectors, there's never been more of a need to digitally transform to ensure current and future success.

Indeed, research firm IDC predicts that worldwide spending on digital transformation will surpass $1 trillion in 2018 up nearly 17% from last year. But it's about more than just throwing money at the problem. Business and technology professionals need to have a solid strategy in place and ensure they're working with the right partners and using the right tools and technologies.

The HR and finance functions lie at the heart of digital transformation, but with people invested quite literally in legacy solutions, it can be hard to make the transition from A to B.

If you're struggling to join the digital dots or just want reassurance you're on the right path, we're here to help. Join us for a live panel discussion, where we will show you have to truly achieve organisational agility and digital transformation success.

Moderated by Dennis' B2B editorial director Maggie Holland, with input from Dave Sohigian, EMEA CTO at Workday and Steve Brooks, an analyst at Creative Intellect Consulting, the discussion looks set to debate and digest many of the key topics of concern and interest to decision makers today.

Discussion points will include:

Why cloud-based technologies are the right platform for digital transformation.

How to get buy-in from key stakeholders needed in the change process.

How large businesses can be as agile as smaller players and how small firms can scale and grow without constraint.

How to marry your business vision with your employee and customer expectations.

How improved data flow and insight can help you make better decisions much more quickly and deliver greater market understanding.

How to avoid common digital transformation and cloud migration pitfalls.

You can sign up for the webinar here.

The business landscape for IT services companies has changed almost beyond recognition in recent years. The emergence and adoption of cloud computing has given organisations the ability to transact and make decisions faster and with greater accuracy than ever before.

Other shifts, such as the increasing focus on e-commerce and the immediacy of social and mobile are also piling on the pressure.

ITSM firms must adapt or risk becoming extinct. But it's not enough to just acknowledge a need to change you need to know when and how to do it.

If you're a large firm, you need to think and act as agile as a start-up. While, if you're a newbie, you'll need to quickly gain the credibility and scale of the more established players, getting to market rapidly and expanding internationally.

"All ITSM companies whether VARs or MSPs etc. are having to restructure their businesses in the face of changing demand. They're shifting from a pure focus on just products or services to offering a mix of products, services and subscription based business models," said David Turner, Senior Director, EMEA for Oracle NetSuite.

"Shrinking margins are having a real impact on their business as they try to juggle the need for higher volumes while keeping costs down and being much more efficient. Some firms are facing the need to increase volumes by 3-400% a year just to stand still. Automation is one answer and is a way of being able to do more."

Existing business models are being challenged and, to remain relevant, organisations are having to reinvent who they are and what they do, according to Turner. But, he added, the cloud offers much potential for support in these endeavours.

Even for businesses that are standing still, automation can help free up valuable resources rather than simply being used as a cost-cutting measure, added Steve Brooks, principal analyst at Creative Intellect Consulting.

"A finance team could spend days working on month-end close. With automation, it can be measured in hours".

Brooks added: "The market is evolving and changing. At the same time, opportunities are both shrinking and growing. ITSM companies need to keep aware of the future market and understand what is adding value. They need to get close to customers. Vendors cannot have 1:1 relationships with every customer it just doesn't scale".

"Change needs to be addressed in three ways 1) Operationally and through automation. 2) Business models need to be reassessed and 3) Through routes to market

If you would like to learn more about how you can position your business for change, join us for a live panel discussion on 22 November. Two decades ago, this new generation of workers helped fuel the massive expansion of business computer use and the productivity gains that ensued.

History is almost repeating itself. The first new knowledge workers raised with the internet are starting to graduate from college and entering the workforce. When these workers learned to read, the World Wide Web and email were in a period of mass expansion and commercialisation. They were in elementary school when the dot-com boom peaked, and in college as social media and smartphone use exploded.

Already, the expectations of a new generation of workers are resetting and refocusing the CIO agenda. As social media becomes a foundational component of work life and corporate collaboration, as new mobile devices and application platforms proliferate, and as more employees work from home, traditional corporate policies on personal computer usage, data security, and application usage are quickly becoming antiquated.

What's more, the rise of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system has become an interesting trigger point for CIOs to take a deep re-look at the applications in their environment.

The result is the rapid consumerisation of IT, resulting in new opportunities and challenges to the organisation.
