CSC wins £291 million NASA contract

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has won a $597 million (291 million) contract to provide supercomputing service to US space agency NASA.

As part of the deal, CSC will support NASA's Advanced Supercomputing Division at Ames Research Centre in California - which, as the centre of NASA's supercomputing, has some of the top high-performance computers in the world. An SGI Altix setup at Ames is listed 12th in the Top500 list of supercomputers worldwide.

"For the past 40 years, CSC has demonstrated the technical expertise, commitment and management to produce significant results for NASA," said Tom Anderson, president of CSC's North American public sector civil division. "CSC is pleased to expand our relationship with NASA and help advance the agency's mission in pioneering the future of space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research."

The contract is set on a two-year base period with eight one-year extension options.
