HTC Flyer review: First Look

Is the first tablet from HTC just an overgrown smartphone or a business user's dream? We think it could be the latter.

The best addition for the corporate customer though was the introduction of HTC Scribe. This large stylus can be used to annotate documents or webpages and keep notes. It may not sound so exciting so far, but when it was teamed with HTC's new TimeMark technology as well, it becomes the dream for note takers in business meeting everywhere.

As you make notes on the Flyer, it also makes an audio recording of the meeting. If you want to rewind to a certain point in the meeting to make sense of what you have written, simply use the scribe to click on the section and it will instantly play it back. You can also use it as a highlighter pen with colour coding. We were very, very impressed by how quick, agile and useful these tools could be in the office environment.

HTC has included a 1.3 megapixel forward facing camera to complement the five-megapixel rear-mounted shooter with auto focus. The ability to place video calls is quickly becoming a standard feature on tablets. Disappointingly, there were no USB ports or HDMI outputs, just a lonely microSD slot to add more storage.

There are downsides to this device, but thanks to the Scribe and TimeMark, along with the foward facing camera, the HTC Flyer is still an attractive tablet for the business user. If you get on with Android and you like the look of HTC phones, this could be the tablet to win you over.

So what are our first impressions?

Verdict

There are a few creases to be ironed out, but some fantastic new business-focussed technologies make this tablet a real temptation. Depending on the final price, we think the HTC Flyer will be a hit.
