UK's first 'internet rage' attack

A man was left with his throat cut after an attack the police are calling the UK's first case of 'internet rage'.

A hearing at the Old Bailey was told Paul Gibbons, 47, from Southwark in London became enraged after a series of confrontations with another user of Yahoo's Muslim 10 chat room. The user, John Jones, used his real name in the chat room and Gibbons used electoral records to get his address.

He then drove 70 miles to attack the man with a pick axe handle and an associate wielding a machete.

Det Con Christopher Creagh of the Metropolitan Police, said: "This is the first instance of a web rage attack."

Johns suffered cuts to his throat, face and hands in the attack before his partner called the police. Gibbons, who has a history of violent behaviour, admitted unlawful wounding and will be sentenced on November 7th.
