IBM today announced its acquisition of Green Hat, a company which specialises in testing cloud software.

Big Blue did not reveal how much it had paid for the firm, which has headquarters in both London and Delaware, but did disclose the firm would be merged with IBM’s ‘rational software’ business – responsible for collaborative lifecycle management solutions.

By bringing in Green Hat’s virtual software testing technology, IBM claims its customers will be able to “achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency” when customising and integrating applications from third parties into their businesses.

“We’ve been focused on transforming our customers’ software development processes through innovative testing and quality improvements,” said Peter Cole, current chief executive (CEO) of Green Hat.

“We are looking forward to bringing Green Hat’s innovative application virtualisation and continuous integration testing expertise to IBM customers who have a growing business need to better manage their complex testing environments.”

Although he brings 2,000 customers with his firm, IBM did not state whether Cole would still be in charge of the technology following the acquisition.

As well as being offered alongside the lifecycle management solution, Green Hat testing products will also be sold with IBM’s global business services’ Application Management Services (AMS), which aids customers in virtualising their applications.

“This acquisition extends IBM’s leadership in driving business agility and software quality by changing the way enterprises can manage software development cost, test cycle time and risk,” added Kristof Kloeckner, general manager of IBM Rational.

“Together, we offer the most complete solution available today for agile software development and testing, with flexible options such as the cloud.”
