SPECIAL EDITION: How AI is changing education
With the right support and communication, educational organizations can use AI to empower teachers and students alike
One of the most commonly-touted benefits of AI is its ability to cut down toil and give workers more time to focus on valuable tasks.
Few professionals could arguably benefit from this more than teachers, who spend many of their evenings and weekend hours completing paperwork and carrying out marking.
How is AI already being used to free up time for teachers, and what can we learn from exemplar organizations leading the way on this path?
In this special edition of the ITPro Podcast, in association with AWS, Jane and Rory are joined by Scott Hayden, head of teaching, learning and digital at Basingstoke College of Technology, to explore how the college has deployed AI to support its teaching staff.
Highlights
"So the Fixter is a tool where our teachers can upload the assignment work, whether that be a transcript, whether that be a document or a slide deck, and it will make its assessment decisions based on the specification, based on the do's and don'ts document that we've worked on very closely with our colleagues at perform partners and AWS, who worked on this with us."
"So the overall percentage might be something like 50-60% human, and then 40% AI. And then once I go to the three buttons to tick to verify, that it is an alignment with the criteria, with my understanding, with the stakes attached to the assessment, then I put my initial on it. Only then does it give me the output. But the percentage is crucial, and that is logged and trackable and auditable and the teacher is monitored on how much they are inputting."
"So Perform Partners were connected with us, and they were back and forth with us for about seven, eight months and very patient sending us screen captures of the UX and UI design, sending us collaborative documents and working in chat spaces and video walkthroughs and allowing us to add comments and to truly iterate. And what was most exciting to me was their humility and accepting the feedback from teachers."
"So AWS were patient, understanding, and with real grace they took the feedback from our teachers, who intervened at numerous points going, "nope, too leading, needs to be adjusted", or "that's too wordy, that wouldn't land with our cohort of learners". So yeah, I was really impressed with their collaborative approach and how they were keen to do something that benefited the sector."
