Qnap TVS-863+ Golden Cloud Turbo vNAS review

Does Qnap’s new Golden Cloud NAS have the Midas touch?

Price
£1,102
  • Good value; 10GbE as standard; Masses of backup apps; Virtualisation Station; QvPC technology
  • Modest 10GbE NAS write speeds

In a world of Intel-based NAS appliances, Qnap's new TVS-863+ Golden Cloud comes as a refreshing change as it's one of the first on the market to use an AMD processor. Clothed in an opulent gold chassis, it's also the first desktop appliance to come with a 10GbE network card included in the price.

To celebrate its AMD partnership, Qnap has launched a family of four Golden Cloud appliances. All four use AMD's quad-core 2.4GHz G-Series SoC complete with integrated Radeon HD graphics.

The TVS-863+ is available with 8GB or 16GB of memory and another notable feature is it's the DDR3L low-voltage variety. Running at 1.35V, its reduced operating temperature is designed to increase memory longevity.

The appliance also supports two 8-bay UX-800P desktop units. Alas, they don't come in matching gold but are linked to the main unit via USB 3 cables and allow capacity to be pushed to 192GB.

Qnap's Finder utility aids with installation and provides assistance with creating NAS shares and iSCSI targets
