Dell fares worst out of the top PC makers
Bad news for Dell on the PC front, as it sees worse sales than other PC makers.
Dell has been one of the biggest casualties of the recession, according to IDC, as it suffered a fall of 25 per cent in year on year shipments from the Q1 of last year to the first quarter of 2009.
The PC market in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) saw Dell fare the worst out of top five PC vendors, with HP and Asus also taking a hit.
Toshiba and Acer were the only manufacturers to see shipments grow, with 7.6 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively.
IDC said that Dell had to face increased challenges this quarter, hit by lower business levels and fierce competition in the notebook space.
Netbooks continued to be successful, contributing to 28 per cent growth despite the economic situation.
Estzter Morvay, research manager for IDC, said that while Acer and Asus continued to lead the netbook market, smaller vendors like Samsung were taking advantage to make an impact on the European PC market.
That said, Asus saw overall shipments fall 12.2 per cent.

She also said in a statement about netbook components: "Intel and Microsoft are dominating, but the market potential in laptops is attracting new players who may be able to challenge them in the long term."
