DSG says new tech service to create 2,000 jobs

DSG International, the country's biggest electrical retailer, said on Monday it had launched a new technical customer support service that would create around 2,000 jobs.

DSG, known as Dixons until last year, said the five-year, 50 million pounds, investment programme in "The TechGuys" would initially be offered in the UK with plans for a later European roll-out.

The group said the service was capable of 16,000 home visits per week while call centres would offer round-the-clock support to customers.

DSG said it planned to open 200 standalone service locations in the UK and service points at 150 of its PC World stores, as well as a number of concessions.

The group, which also own Currys and Dixons/Currys.digital, said the market for support services is worth 1 billion pounds in the UK alone and that as customers increasingly rely on technology that the market could double within 5 years.

Analysts say that the group, which in July completed the sale of its stake in The Link mobile phone stores, has been looking to focus on selling electrical goods, PCs and computer equipment in stores around Europe and over the Internet.

Shares in DSG, which have outperformed the UK general retailers sector by 17 percent over the last 12 months, closed at 208-1/4 pence on Friday, valuing the group at around 3.8 billion pounds.
