BT has chosen Caringo as the supplier of its object-based storage service as part of its BT Compute Storage offering, which will help extend the product's reach into new areas.

Caringo's services will offer a better object-based storage option for its customers, while ensuring enhanced data protection, performance and reliability, according to BT.

With end-to-end encryption using AES 2048-bit, privately held encryption keys for Amazon S3 compatible and BT SCSP object storage access APIs and isolated data storage areas to prevent unauthorised access, BT Compute Storage powered by Caringo Swarm puts security at the heart of everything it does.

Additionally, as Caringo's services are based in local datacentres, it means customers will have complete peace of mind that their data is being stored close to where the company is based, adhering to data compliance laws too.

Scott Sinclair of analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group, explained the security element is a very important part of BT's Compute Storage initiative. "Data services are increasingly becoming a de facto part of enterprises around the globe and the need to quickly and capably penetrate these markets with cloud services requires an intimate knowledge of local rules and regulations," he said.

BT says its Compute Storage powered by Caringo Swarm will be the first of its Cloud of Clouds offerings, which it will build upon in the coming years with other partners.

"BT Compute Storage allows enterprises to extend file storage, data protection and sharing across a remote-office storage infrastructure," said Neil Lock, vice president, BT Compute, BT Global Services.

"Object-based storage is a great way to make data accessible on any device to better support an organization's BYOD strategy, whether it's for long-term backup or file sync-and-share services in the cloud. We chose to partner with Caringo because of their leadership in object storage. Swarm offers a rich feature set and the resilience that we need to ensure our customers have the security and reliability they demand."
