Scottish firm to provide free cyber security training for remote workers

Edinburgh-based GTS Solutions and Swiss security specialist Lucy have joined forces to offer free cyber security training for the millions of people who are now working remotely in the UK.

The two firms are rolling out an online course as an emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to The National.

With many businesses in the UK being forced to work from home in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19, there is a danger that cyber attacks could increase.

Already, malicious actors have attempted to breach the World Health Organisation and hackers have attacked network operators.

GTS is aiming to empower remote workers with security knowledge via online courses. These are designed to educate people on safer ways to work from home and will include interactive quizzes, advice videos and questionnaires.

"Lucy is a brand that is known internationally and being an official partner gives us the opportunity to export to our desired market across a number of countries," said GTS chief executive Chris Thewlis.

"This is a fantastic learning and educational package as well as being a cyber security safety package which we hope will prove of benefit to the thousands of people now having to work from home due to the coronavirus pandemic."

The free course has been funded by a loan from UMi Debt Finance Scotland and has made GTS Lucy's only managed security provider in the country. The Swiss firm offers security training services in 30 different languages.

"Working with GTS Solutions in Scotland will help millions of people stay safe from criminals," said Paul Dobson, Lucy's director in the UK and Ireland.

Offering free cyber security training for people being forced to work from home at relatively short notice could help them fend recognise phishing attempts and cyber security attacks framed around COVID-19 and that aim to capitalise on the panic the pandemic is causing. One such example is a sophisticated scam being aimed at Three customers effectively exploiting the virus zeitgeist.
