Twitter launches Vine for Android

Twitter has released its mobile video creation app Vine to Android users as it looks to counter clone apps such as Vine Flow, Vine Eye and Vinery that have sprung up on the platform.

Android owners that using version 4.0 or above are able to download Vine today.

Vine for Android has most of the features which has been available to iOS users since January. These include the ability to find popular posts, friends and trending Vine's. The Android app also has a unique zoom tool, the firm noted in a blog post.

Vine was originally released in January for iOS users and has gained over 13 million users.

Twitter noted that although it has been focused on developing the Android app, updates will be made to the iOS app.

"Though we've been very focused on releasing Vine for Android, we've continued to release updates and add new features to the iOS app. As a result, the two apps are not perfectly in sync, but that won't be the case for long," Sara Haider, an Android engineer noted in the blog.

"Over the coming weeks, you'll see frequent updates with new features including front-facing camera, search, mentions and hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook as well as bug fixes and performance improvements."
