Uber refunds journeys during London Bridge terror attack

Uber has refunded journeys made during Saturday night's London terror attack, but has come under fire from some users for allegedly charging more.

The London Bridge terror attack that occurred at around 10pm killed seven people and left 48 injured, and people in the vicinity tried to escape the area by using taxis, including Uber.

Tom Elvidge, general manager of Uber in London, said: "Our hearts go out to everybody affected by yet another horrific attack on our city. We'd like to thank all the drivers who helped tens of thousands of Londoners get home safely last night.

"As soon as we heard about the incident we immediately suspended dynamic pricing all around the area of the attacks - and shortly afterwards across the whole of central London - just as we did following the attacks in Manchester and Westminster.

We are also ensuring all rides from around the affected area were free of charge. Our team is also working with the Metropolitan Police to help them get any footage from drivers who were in the area at the time."

However, some people took to Twitter to question Uber's reported claim that it stopped charging its standard surge pricing at 10.50pm, with one claiming that the company continued to charge users past midnight.

"Why are [Uber] drivers charging up to 10x rather than helping those in need?" said another Twitter user.

Another, @isobelvandyke, claimed that their Uber driver "deliberately drove [her] through central London" near the affected area because she was unwilling to pay a fee to avoid the area.

Uber calls its pattern of increased fees 'dynamic pricing', hiking up fares when there are more passengers requesting taxis than there are Uber drivers available. Following the attack in Manchester nearly two weeks ago, Uber offered free rides to take people away from the area.
