QTS backup features
Synology is the one to beat for backup features but Qnap's latest QTS software now gives it a good run for its money. The new OpenStack Swift app supports big cloud storage providers including HP Cloud, IBM SoftLayer and RackSpace.
We used the S3Plus app with our Amazon Web Services account and had no problems with the Glacier app either. Qnap now has apps for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage while for file sharing, its Dropbox app is even easier to use.
We also tested Qnap's new IDrive app with our account and were able to select files and folders on the appliance and create backup schedules to the cloud. For restoration, it's not as intuitive as Synology's version as Qnap's app lists the Linux file structure on the appliance and it took us a while to find our shares lurking in the /share/cachedev1_data folder.
Cloud backups feature are extensive with separate apps for the Amazon S3 and Glacier hosting services
