Sun brand lives on as Oracle launches telecoms servers
Oracle has continued to carry on the success of Sun Microsystems’ Netra brand with the introduction of two new products.

Oracle has announced two new servers to add to the Netra line, continuing the work of Sun Microsystems.
The servers are designed for telecoms companies, ensuring they can deal with the accelerating growth of data in current times whilst claiming to provide essential high availability.
"The launch really shows and reinforces the continued and sustained investment Oracle is making into this line," Gordon Rawling, senior director of regional marketing, told IT PRO.
"Processing requirements continue to grow [and] it is imperative the network performs."
The first product is the Sun Netra CP3270 ATCA Server. The x86 blade server supports 32GB of memory through eight DIMM slots and claims to increase application performance whilst lowering power and cooling needs.
The second product is the Sun Netra X4270 Server. There is support for eight processors, doubling the number of threads from the previous generation, and 18 DIMM slots. Oracle again claimed the server reduced power and cooling requirements, in turn lowering the cost of running.
Customers of the Netra line have included BT, Vodafone and Nokia Siemens Networks, said Rawling.
