Fon buys GSpace
Wireless internet service provider Fon has bought browser plugin maker Gspace for an undisclosed amount.
GSpace is a Firefox browser extension that allows users to upload and keep files using their GMail accounts. The extension will be integrated into a new device Fon will launch in February 2007 called Fon Liberator which is a Wi-Fi router that allows user to attach storage devices via a USB port.
The integrated extension will allow Gspace users to move files from their Gmail accounts straight to the storage device attached to a Fon Liberator. According to website GigaOM, this device is based on the Open WRT operating system and Fon hopes to bundle other applications into the router, such as a BitTorrent client, in an attempt to make
Fon's network and services more attractive to users. It will also have features which will allow users to upload photos to Flickr or videos to YouTube. The new device will sport a web interface allowing users to access files on the locally attached drive from the internet.
