IBM eyes up Transitive buy
More diversification at Big Blue as it prepares to snap-up virtualisation technology vendor Transitive.

Computing giant IBM has confirmed that it plans to acquire privately-owned Transitive, which specialises in cross-platform virtualisation technology. The deal moves IBM into the competitive virtualisation market dominated by VMware.
"This acquisition is part of IBM's strategy to help clients optimise the efficiency and productivity of their computing infrastructure and improve the use of the servers that run them," the company said in a statement.
Transitive, which is based in California and has a research and development facility in the UK in Manchester, is best known for its QuickTransit virtualisation software. QuickTransit allows applications created for a particular processor platform and operating system to run almost seamlessly on different platforms without modifications to source code or binaries.
Financial terms for the deal were not disclosed.
IBM already bundles software from Transitive with some of its computer systems.
