Previous recession-struck generations invested in transport infrastructure to boost the economy, and we should look to technology and eco-friendly industries for our salvation, according to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Speaking at a European conference yesterday, Brown told business and political leaders that it is essential to "build the technological and environmental infrastructure of the 21st century."
"We have looked at how, just as many years ago investment in road and rail and infrastructure was a powerful stimulus to the economies then, so too in this new age we can invest in the digital infrastructure for the future," he said.
Brown said telecommunications presumably referencing fibre broadband and green tech should be the key areas of focus.
Earlier this month, the government promised 30 million in capital funding for small tech businesses. But last month, the Environmental Industries Commission warned that the UK wasn't doing enough to keep up with the US when it comes to investment in green tech, after President Elect Barack Obama apparently promised 150 million in investment.
