Google updates images, news

Google has updated its image search system as well as its news aggregation service.

Image search now features a 'similar photo' function, so if you find the right sort of picture, you can click to find more like it. For example, searching "jaguar" would bring up photos of both the cat and the car; this system then lets users pick to see more of either.

"Using it you can now find images that look like an existing result simply by clicking on a link," developers wrote on the Google blog. "Using visual similarity, you don't have to refine the text of your search, instead, you can just click on the link of an image you like."

Yesterday, Google boffins also announced that they were testing out the merits of CAPTCHA technology based on images rather than text to ensure responses are not automatically generated by computers.

Google also updated its Google News aggregation service, adding a graphic-based timeline feature.

"You can search and browse results from Google News, including headlines, quotes, photos from our Hosted News partners, and YouTube partner videos. You can also search for thousands of archival newspapers and magazines from Google News Archive Search and Google Book Search," said Andy Hertzfeld, Software Engineer, in the Google News blog.

Google News has been the subject of some controversy lately, with newspapers such as the Guardian criticising it.
