Intel CEO claims Android in ‘chaos’

Intel chief executive (CEO) Paul Otellini has claimed Google's Android mobile operating system is an example of "chaos," whilst Apple's is in "order."

At an investors meeting in California, Otellini claimed Google's business model was to get as broad a base as possible so it had naturally created a fragmented system.

"They don't get paid by selling Android," he said. "They get paid by clicks."

"At the end of the day, the more pervasive Android is, the more money Google ultimately makes."

Otellini then claimed Apple exerted much more control with iOS, including the end user experience and pricing.

However, it wasn't all doom and gloom for Android, as Otellini went on to say he saw what Google was experiencing as echoing Microsoft's early attempts to solidify the Windows operating system as it shifted from one platform to another. He described the situation as "growing pains" for Android.

Otellini said Google was taking positive steps towards unifying the Android system and bringing "order to chaos," such as the company's recent agreements with manufacturers to keep Android handsets up-to-date.

"The notion of compatibility forwards and backwards, the notion of verification... is something you'll see imposed on the Android ecosystem over time," he said.

"If you read the press about anti-fragmentation agreements, that's exactly what's happening today."
