Asus VivoTab Smart review: First look

A 10in tablet which features an Intel Atom 1.8GHz dual-core processor and the full Windows 8 OS for £399.

With a price of just 399, the Asus VivoTab Smart could be the best priced Windows 8 device on the market.

Key specs include a 10in IPS LCD Screen with a resolution of 1366 x 1080 pixels. This is the same resolution you can expect to see on the Microsoft Surface, and while pixel density isn't eye-popping, the IPS tech delivers great viewing angles and a strong picture overall.

There's a 2-megapixel front facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear facing camera with an f/2.2 lens as found on the Asus Transformer Prime and Transformer Infinity.

Asus Vivo Tab Smart

Asus is known for its outlandish designs, but the firm has kept things simple with the VivoTab Smart. Ports have been kept to minimum with no full sized USB port anywhere to be seen. That does however help to make the tablet perfectly manageable one handed.

Asus Vivo Tab Smart

Despite no dock, the Asus VivoTab Smart does support an optional origami case that gives the tablet the ability to stand upright - perfect for the complementing, incredibly lithe Bluetooth keyboard available for purchase alongside the tab.

With a price point of 399, the VivoTab Smart impresses on the spec front too. In order to run full Windows 8 it's powered along by an Intel Atom Z2760 dual core CPU clocked at 1.8GHz. You can expect 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory with microSD expandability for up to an additional 64GB.

If you want one - and we do - you can expect the VivoTab Smart to hit the UK towards the end of January. In the meantime, enjoy our hands-on video below.

Verdict

With a price of £400 for a full Windows 8 machine - this could be a useful alternative to the iPad for business users. However, it remains to be seen what sort of battery life the Vivo Tab Smart has to offer, and how it will function without docking functionality.
