SAP adds 27 customers to blockchain initiative


Twenty-seven new customers have joined the SAP's blockchain initiative, the company has announced, helping it develop new applications for the technology across a huge array of industry verticals.

The companies jumping aboard SAP's blockchain train include businesses in consumer products, telecom, retail, pharmaceuticals, logistics, agriculture, high-tech, aerospace and defence, industrial machinery, energy and utilities, and public services, demonstrating the company's appeal across the entire spectrum.

"Our customers and partners are eager to join SAP in embracing blockchain as a distributed ledger that can increase transparency and collaboration," Tanja Rueckert, president of IoT and digital supply chain at SAP, said. "We are equally eager to co-innovate with the world's leading companies to reimagine a future where blockchain is woven into the fabric of the digital value chain."

The new collaborators will help SAP develop fresh use cases for blockchain technology, aiming to demonstrate it's not just suitable for the finance sector, for example.

Some of the applications it will be experimenting with include its Asset Intelligence Network, allowing OEMs to share asset information with operators and service providers, SAP Distributed Manufacturing to foster better relationships between manufacturers and suppliers, and SAP Transportation Management to boost international trade.

Other offerings tested under the blockchain umbrella are SAP Global Track and Trace and SAP Advanced Track and Trace for Pharmaceuticals, offering end-to-end tracking of physical objects and people across industries.

Hartmut Mueller, SVP Business Solutions, Deutsche Telekom IT - one of the companies that has joined the SAP blockchain initiative, said: "At Deutsche Telekom, we see a big potential for blockchain technology in the telecommunication business. Our cooperation with SAP will speed up digitalization to the benefit of our customers."
