DataCentred has added 64-bit ARM servers to its Openstack cloud, moving to fill a niche for scalable, virtualised ARM infrastructure.

The offering will run on HP's M400 ARM hardware and will allow 32-bit and 64-bit processes to be executed alongside one another, reducing the cost and power required to run data centres and virtualisation operations, the firm claims.

It also adds support for customers to develop applications on an OpEx model, reducing initial set up costs.

Mike Kelly, chief executive and founder of DataCentred said: "We are thrilled to be the first OpenStack public cloud operator to feature 64-bit ARM instances. This breakthrough is testament to the considerable skill and expertise of our OpenStack cloud development team.

"This is probably the first example of Moonshot AArch64 running in Europe outside of HP’s development labs, and certainly the first example of generally available Moonshot backed AArch64 instances in an OpenStack public cloud anywhere in the world."

The company added that the decision to offer AppliedMicro's X-Gene ARM AArch64 architecture was boosted by both potential new customers and existing customer demand, while those in the wider Openstack community were looking for an option that allowed on-demand access to platforms.

Matt Jarvis, head of cloud computing at DataCentred, said: "There is currently a scarcity in the market for accessible, scalable 64-bit ARM and by adding this service to our cloud platform DataCentred can provide customers with access to this hardware at low risk.

"We are already seeing significant interest in our key vertical markets and expect this to grow over the next year."
