Lancashire Uni unveils innovative iPhone app

iPhone 3GS

The University of Central Lancashire

has designed an iPhone application that provides staff, students and visitors with useful information about the campus, where to go and what to do.

The Preston-based university, which is home to around 35,000 students and staff, believes it's the first such institution in the UK to launch its own app for the iPhone.

The app builds on existing university tech resources, such as speedy webmail access, a staff directory, a printing account top-up facility, meeting room booking and a comprehensive library catalogue.

"The new iPhone application illustrates our commitment to provide information and services to our students in a way that is convenient for them," Michael Ahern, the university's director of learning and information services, said in a statement.

"Students today lead very busy lives balancing study, part-time work and social activities. The iPhone application demonstrates how UCLan is increasingly able to support its students in a way that recognises their busy lifestyles, and ensures they are able to get the most from the latest advancements in technology."

The university now plans to build on the free app by enhancing on-campus search and building a news-based service to plug into existing functionality.
