Does IT really have recession-busting powers?
A recent BCS event pondered whether IT could lead the UK out of the recession, while research from IDC and Microsoft this week suggested it has the power to lift the global economy. Fact or just well-intentioned fiction?


[a href="https://www.itpro.com/613078/focus-on-innovation" target="_blank"]Innovation/a] is a key economic driver and it is more pronounced in the tech world than any other industry, bar perhaps engineering and the sciences.
Some may mock this industry, suggesting the realms of databases, datacentres, storage and the like are dull and boring. But, perhaps they are just a tad jealous that ours is an industry that is ripe with talent and modest enough to fail to realise just how good it actually is until it really matters.

Maggie has been a journalist since 1999, starting her career as an editorial assistant on then-weekly magazine Computing, before working her way up to senior reporter level. In 2006, just weeks before ITPro was launched, Maggie joined Dennis Publishing as a reporter. Having worked her way up to editor of ITPro, she was appointed group editor of CloudPro and ITPro in April 2012. She became the editorial director and took responsibility for ChannelPro, in 2016.
