Sony's Xperia Z2 is the chocked full of the latest components. It's powered by Qualcomm's 2014 Snapdragon 801 quad-core chip alongside 3GB RAM - triple the amount found in the Air.
Sony offers 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and the Z2 comes with microSD support, allowing you to increase this by 128GB. The device supports micro-USB connectivity for charging and transfers files to PCs or Macs. A multitude of wireless connectivity options are supported too including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA, Miracast and NFC.
Sony offers an 8.1-megapixel camera on the back with autofocus and the ability to film in HD. On the front there's also a 2.2-megapixel camera for video chatting.
Apple's fifth-generation iPad has a dual-core A7 1.3 GHz chip. It supports 64-bit apps but the inclusion of 1GB of RAM is likely to cause issues when future resource hungry apps and updates are rolled out.
The Air is limited when it comes to storage. You can choose between 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage - there is no way to expand this after purchase. There's a solitary Lightening connector for charging and transferring content and wireless connectivity is limited to dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.
On the iPad there's a 5-megapixel iSight camera on the back which packs a punch whilst on the front there's a 1.2-megapixel camera.
