Amazon's wearables store opens in UK

Amazon's wearable electronics store has opened in the UK, with more than 100 devices available, including activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and wearable cameras.

In addition to more unusual wearable devices - such as charging trousers - articles from manufacturers including Sony, Samsung, Garmin, Jawbone and Gopro are all available to purchase.

Amazon's director of consumer electronics Andrew Milliken said: "Sales of wearable technology devices have taken off in the last year with many customers already using them on a daily basis. With designs continually becoming simpler, smaller, and more stylish, devices have become increasingly useful and fit seamlessly into everyday life."

Although the online shopfront looks just like Amazon's regular store and its groceries section, the retailer is also using it as an opportunity to educate people about the potential of wearable electronics. Its Learning Centre includes compatibility information, images, videos, reviews and buying guides to help users make the most of their devices.

The online retailer said in the launch statement: "Customers will be able to learn about devices which are 'coming soon' and be amongst the first to purchase the latest technology by pre-ordering new releases, including the A. Sauvage Wireless Charging Trousers."

Milliken added: "The focus is also on providing customers with all the information they need to understand these new devices and make the best possible choice."

Amazon's US wearables store launched in April, with its director of Wireless and Mobile Electronics, John Nemeth, commenting: "We're thrilled to bring our customers a store with the largest selection and great prices that helps eliminate the guesswork when deciding which wearable devices best fit their needs -- whether that is tracking activity, staying connected through smart watches, or capturing their next adventure with wearable cameras."
