Dell to acquire Wyse Technology
Dell wants computing 'from the edge to the core to the cloud'
Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Wyse Technology, the largest vendor of thin clients, with the aim of expanding its desktop virtualization capabilities and offer new solutions and services to support Dell’s enterprise business.
According to data from analyst firm IDC, Wyse finally overtook rival HP last year to secure leadership in a thin client market valued at $15bn a year by 2015. Wyse shipped more than 1m units in 2011 and launched a number of innovative products including new form factors, zero-client devices and cloud-focused software.
Jeff Clarke, president, End User Computing Solutions at Dell, states: “The Wyse Technology desktop virtualization capability complements Dell’s strongest-ever device and computing solutions portfolio, and strengthens our position in offering customers among the broadest set of computing choices from the edge to the core to the cloud.”
Wyse is privately-held and believed to highly profitable. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed but with more that 20m units sold worldwide over its thirty year history and more than 3,000 resellers spanning 50 countries, the deal will allow Dell to leapfrog into number one spot in the market.
Wyse president and CEO Tarkan Maner added: “We believe that taking this step with Dell is a very natural progression for our business and offers our customers many great advantages not available to them today.”
