Juniper has revealed its intention to buy security software startup Cyphort to help grow its Sky ATP platform by offering support across a wider variety of file types and adding on better threat detection technology.

Cyphort's software can be deployed either on-premise or in the cloud, offering a completely tailored solution for customers, which can integrate with existing security infrastructure.

"At Juniper Networks, we recognize the importance of shoring up internal defenses given today’s dynamic security threat landscape," Kevin Hutchins, SVP of strategy and product management at Juniper said. "As cloud-based Advanced Threat Prevention (ATP) is becoming a critical feature of next generation firewalls, Juniper intends to be a leader in the NGFW space as it’s critical to our Software-Defined Secure Network vision."

The acquisition is set to close in September, although it's not clear how Cyphort's services will be integrated into Juniper, who will join the networking business or how it will affect the channel.

Working for Juniper won't be unfamiliar for Cyphort's chief executive Manoj Leelanivas. He spent 14 years working for the business, with other roles on his CV including positions at Cisco. He apparently owns more than 10 patents acquired while working for the two networking companies, which will come in handy for future product developments at the firm.

"Cyphort will seamlessly integrate into Juniper’s Sky ATP platform to provide customers with improved performance, an increased range of supported file types and additional threat detection capabilities (e.g. on- and off-premises support, cloud email, analytics and improved malware detection)," Hutchins added.

"We are very excited to welcome the Cyphort team to Juniper, and we look forward to their contributions and solutions to bolster Juniper’s Software-Defined Secure Network solution."
