Future of IP video surveillance pulled into focus

Woman's eye with light shining on it

The future looks bright for the video surveillance market, according to a new survey of customers and channel players from IT analyst firm Frost & Sullivan.

System integrators, consultants and distributors questioned at security event IFSEC said they anticipate an increase in video surveillance budgets of close to eight percent. 71 percent of channel players believe that the pace of migration to IP systems will quicken in 2011/12, with systems integrators leading the charge, followed by security consultants, installers and distributors.

Indeed, 12 percent of end users said they are planning to install an IP/network video solution within the next 12 months, with growth expected to be faster among SMEs (under 1,000 employees.) Video analytics is also set to experience strong new demand, though this will be with larger organisations.

Conversely, the decline in analogue camera usage will be highest in very large organisations with 50 percent reporting a reduction in spend.

To support the migration from an analogue system to a network/ IP video surveillance solution most end-users questioned partnered with a systems integrator (29 percent) and/or trained existing IT staff (26 percent). Training existing security staff was the least preferred of the key migration strategies. Channel firms on the other hand are placing much more emphasis on training existing staff (44 percent) while also recruiting IT talent (five percent) to bridge the knowledge gap.
